Wynell Phelps was born on the 10th of October 1936 to Lester and Juanita Williams and raised in Kosse, Texas. She passed peacefully from this life at her home on Monday, April 6, 2026.

Wynell grew up in Kosse, the daughter of a farming family. After graduating from Marlin High School, she married her high school sweetheart John Phelps, and they moved to the Pasadena area. They were fortunate to join the family at South Avenue Baptist Church where they met many of their dearest friends and continued to be members the rest of their lives.

Wynell was a loving wife and mother and the backbone of one of the largest State Farm offices in the country. At the office she wore many hats. In addition to running the office she was the unofficial CFO, mentor and confidante to all.  John often said he could not have made it without Wynell. It is a testament to her warm heart and loving nature that their employees chose to make their careers with them and stayed the best of friends during their retirement.

As dedicated as she was to the insurance business, her first love was her husband and children. Wynell and John were blessed with three sons who brought her immense joy. Sadly, their oldest son Doug passed away at the age of 17 from cerebral palsy.  Wynell used this difficult loss to help others who were grieving during their time in the funeral home business. Her empathy and caring heart for others going through their own losses shined through with the families they met there. She wanted to make sure that loved ones were treated with the utmost compassion and respect and that every life was celebrated with flowers. Their time in the funeral home industry helped her own healing by being there for others and led to many years of a wonderful partnership and lifelong friendships with Wendell and Marynell Wallace and family.

In her free time, Wynell loved spending time with her family and friends. Some of her favorite times were spent having lunch with her dear friend Sue Beckman at the local Hartz Chicken buffet, shopping the best sales at Foley's, and collecting dolls, beanie babies, Waterford crystal and Lenox. She also loved a good game of dominos or 42 at their place on the lake with beloved friends. Nothing touched her heart like time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was very proud of all of them and treasured her time watching them grow up. No one was a stranger, everyone was welcomed warmly, and there was always room for one more person at Wynell's table.

In her later years, she was lovingly cared for by Amalia Moreno, Gloria Garcia and Esperanza Aruijo, and Pamela Lara. These incredible ladies were dedicated to her care and have become a special part of the Phelps family.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Howard Phelps of 63 years, her son Douglas Ray Phelps, brothers Weldon Williams, Eudean Williams and Darrell Williams, brother-in-law Lyndon Phelps and sister-in-law Peggy Phelps.

She is survived by son Steve Phelps and wife Jana; son Ken Phelps and wife Alicia; grandchildren Becky Phelps and Luke Feldmeier, Johnny Phelps and wife Kimberly, Bethany Lepretre and husband Kegan and Quentin "Q" Phelps; great-grandchildren Easton, Will, Harper, Leighton, Jace, Olivia, and Sawyer.  She is survived by sisters-in-law Peggie Williams and Kitty Williams, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 16th, from 10:00 am until 11:00am, with the service following at 11:00 am, held at First Baptist Church Pasadena Chapel, 7500 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, Texas 77505.
