William Richard Avery was born on November 10, 1936 in Langdale, Alabama where he was raised by his grandparents. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and under the GI bill attended Auburn University where he earned a bachelor's degree. After graduation he moved to Houston, Texas and worked in advertising at the Houston Chronicle until his retirement.

Richard met the love of his life, Wanda, in 1971 and married shortly after in 1972. The couple spent much of their time together traveling, building their farm together in Caldwell, Texas, snow skiing, and going to "drop zones" where Richard would skydive. They eventually became very active members at Second Baptist Church in Houston. Richard became a deacon and together they directed the Front Runners Bible Study for many years. One of their greatest joys was watching their family grow with the addition of grandkids and great grandkids.

In his retirement he volunteered at Fort Bend Christian Academy reading to school children where he made a lasting impact maintaining relationships with many families. With a love for the golf course, he and Wanda traveled through England and Scotland where he played the world-famous courses. A loving and devoted husband, Richard was by Wanda's side when she went to be with Jesus on February 21, 2023.

Richard was survived by his three step-sons: Ron Schneider, Chuck Schneider and Doug Schneider, and his step-brothers Hobie and Mac, and step-sister Laura.

"Rich" will be laid to rest alongside Wanda on Monday, August 11, at the Houston National Cemetery during a private ceremony.
