Walter Joseph Cavanaugh Jr., 88 years of age, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2023 with his wife at his side.

Walter was born at St. Joseph Hospital, in Houston, Texas on October 24, 1934, the second child of Walter and Susan Cavanaugh. Walter attended St. Christopher Elementary School and graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston in 1964. He served in the U.S. Army. During his military service, he served three years at Fort Kobbe, Balboa in the Panama Canal Zone.

After his Army service ended, Walter's business career began in commercial food supply and services at Anderson Clayton, specifically working in warehousing and delivery. Prior to his retirement as Vice President of Operations of Sysco Food Services on August 1, 1991, he was a major contributor to improving warehousing and inventory management.

Walter Jo, as he was called in his younger years, is remembered for his kindness, warm smile, and gentle nature, and of course his brilliant blue eyes. He had a love of family gatherings, celebrations, fishing and cruises. He found particular joy in saltwater fishing for trout, redfish, snapper, cobia, tuna and anything else that made the fishing reel sing. He was an avid golfer and reader. He was lovingly called "Uncle Bo" by his nieces and nephews. He always treasured time spent with them. He is also remembered for his devotion to his Catholic faith.

The love Walter and Barbara shared in their 23 years of marriage was reflected in their daily devotion to each other, often heard when they prayed over meals… "we thank God for the gift of our love and our marriage."

Walter leaves a legacy of faithful devotion to God, and the love and care of his spouse and all his extended family. His warm smile and generous spirit will forever touch our hearts. His motto of "we help, where help is needed" will not be forgotten.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the friends and caregivers for their support and prayers for Walter during his illness, and a special thanks to Kathy for her compassion and professionalism in caring for Walter over the last year.

Walter is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Guidry Cavanaugh, his brother Louis Cavanaugh and wife Judy, his sister Carolyn Marrero, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and their families.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents Walter J. Cavanaugh Sr. and Susan Elizabeth Wolf Cavanaugh and his oldest sister Clara Farr.

Visitation will be held from 5:30pm until 8:00pm Wednesday, February 22, with recitation of the rosary at 7:00pm at Peevey Funeral Home, 12440 Beamer Rd., Houston 77089. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00am Thursday, February 23, at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 11011 Hall Rd., Houston 77089. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, Garden of Gethsemane, 6900 Lawndale, Houston 77023.
