Steve Jerrel Hawkes, 77 of Alvin, TX went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 27, 2024.  Steve was born on in Houston, TX to Ruby and William Hawkes.  At the age of six, they moved to McCurtain, OK where he spent most of his formative years.  He graduated valedictorian from McCurtain High School in 1965 and received his associates degree from Eastern Oklahoma A & M College in 1967.  After attending Northeastern State University in 1967 and 1968, he married his love, Janice Rex, and moved to Pittsburg, KS where they both graduated.  Steve received his master's degree in chemistry, and taught chemistry for five years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College in Miami, OK.  In 1974, Steve moved from teaching to the chemical industry in Houston where he worked 42 years for Ethyl/Albemarle Corporation.  He decided he was ready to do some gardening, spend time with family, and spoil his granddaughter.

Steve was a loving husband for only a few days under 56 years, devoted Dad and Granddad.  He loved fishing, hunting quail and duck, and gardening.  Steve loved his Lord and the church, where he served as a deacon, taught bible study for 40 years, and served on committees.   Even in his poor health, he still loved to go to church and worship.

He leaves behind his wife, Janice Rex Hawkes of the home, daughter Karissa Geis and husband Chad of Ruston, LA, granddaughter Ryleigh Geis, sisters Shirley Brown of Fort Worth, and Teresa Nance and husband Ed of Stigler, OK, brother Doug Hawkes and wife Davida of Coweta, OK, numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father Ruby Nixon Hawkes and William Henry Hawkes, brother Billy Joe Sumner, and his grandparents.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 6pm with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Peevey Funeral Home, 12440 Beamer Road, Houston, TX 77089.

An additional service and visitation in Oklahoma will be held, Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home 204 NE "F" Street, Stigler, OK 74462. The family will welcome friends from 1-2pm, with a service starting at 2pm, interment immediately following at Antioch Cemetery.
