Leonard Lee Abbott, Sr., was born to Guy Nova and Alma Dorthea Abbott on September 16, 1933, and passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born in Binger, Oklahoma, but his family soon moved to Freer, Texas, when he was just a young child. It was in the Brush Country of South Texas where Leonard developed a love for exploring and adventurism, as a young man spending many nights outdoors with his cousins, learning to live off the land and find his own food.

As an adult, Leonard cultivated many hobbies. He was an accomplished artist and excelled at painting seascapes and Texas scenery; his beloved bluebonnets featured prominently in his paintings. Very mechanically inclined, Leonard was a self­-taught mechanic who enjoyed tinkering in the garage with small engines or improving upon his latest "invention," much to the chagrin of his children. He also taught himself to make beautiful acoustic guitars.

Leonard was a very friendly man; he always sought to put others at ease. He loved to make new friends and enjoyed telling them of his childhood adventures, reciting jokes which some may have deemed corny but always produced a good laugh. Leonard was a God-fearing man, and he taught his children to love and respect their Creator, Jehovah.

Mr. Abbott was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Maria J. Abbott.  He was the father of ten kids: Kathy Crystal Kehoss; Leonard Lee, Abbott, Jr.; David Joseph Abbott; Joel Lynn Abbott; John Lyle Abbott; James Alan Abbott; Mark Christian Abbott; Mary Helen Abbott Burkes; Lydia Lea Hardison; and Lea Dorothy Stewart; and grandfather to 16 grandchildren.

"Pops" will be greatly missed, but as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, the family takes comfort in the beautiful hope of a resurrection and being reunited with their father in an earthly paradise. Acts 24:15 - "And I have hope towards God, which hope these men also look forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."

A memorial service will be held at Peevey Funeral Home, Saturday, September 21, at 2:00pm.
