Larry Jim Glenn, aka "Vern", "Uncle NASA", "Bubs", and "Pops", age 78, passed away in Houston, Texas, after a few years of living with dementia and recently suffering several strokes.

Larry was born in Palestine, Texas, to Elmo Cavin ("Cab") Glenn and Pattie Miller Glenn.  He was a proud member of the Robert E. Lee High School Band in Baytown, where his band teacher and lifelong friend and mentor, Mr. Charles Forque, instilled a love of music and inspired a calling to become a part of something bigger than himself.

Larry joined the Air Force in 1966, where he worked in aircraft maintenance, as a scanner, and a flight engineer.  Through the Air Force, Larry began to form friendships that lasted a lifetime.  Although he flew several aircraft, his unit was one of the first to receive the new C-130As on which he flew and work on for 7 years.  He later moved to the Air Force Reserves, worked on various aircraft, and flew the KC-10 air refuelers. He proudly served in Desert Shield, where he refueled fighter jets mid-air.

In the summer of 1971, Larry met Susan Tippit, and after only a two-week whirlwind romance, he asked her to marry him.  They were married in November of 1971 and they moved all around the south as the Air Force took Larry to different stations of duty.  Their daughter, Jennifer Chrisitan, was born in New Orleans in 1976, and their daughter, Kristin Carol, was born in Lake Charles 1978.

In 1981, Larry and Susan put roots down in southeast Houston to be near his new job at Ellington Field with NASA, where he was a flight engineer.  Larry loved flying and being a part of the NASA family, and he enjoyed the different airplanes he got to fly, including the G-I, G-II, G-III, KC-135, T-38, the Shuttle Training Aircraft, and the Super Guppy.  He retired from NASA in 2008 and logged more than 12,500 hours of flight time.

Larry led an exciting life, meeting presidents and VIPs, movie stars, and was friends with all of the astronauts.  He held super bowl parties for his Air Force and NASA friends.  He supported numerous shuttle launches and landings.  His NASA team would attend air shows across the country to showcase the Super Guppy and other NASA aircraft.  Later after NASA, his career moved into Quality Assurance with Northrop Grumman, and took him to cities across the country, and as far as Dubai.

Larry was cheerful and enjoyed making others laugh and telling stories.  He was an avid collector of Lionel trains and was a member of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Train Collectors Association.  He enjoyed setting up train displays and sharing stories of the old days of rail construction and train travel, as the older generations of his family helped to build America's railroads.

Larry was known at NASA for always having Hubba Bubba gum and "Fireballs", a cinnamon-flavored hard jawbreaker-style candy.  In fact, the Fireballs were such a hit, the astronauts of the crew of space shuttle Discovery STS-82 brought some on board with them and gave him autographed pictures of fireballs floating around in the shuttle, along with one remaining Fireball that went up to space and back.

Larry was an active member of the Clear Brook High School Band Booster Club in the 1990's, where he supported his daughters as they both played trumpet in the band.  Many of the band parents became lifelong friends of Larry's, and he enjoyed reliving his high school band days. Larry was well-known for always having a video camera in hand to record everything he saw.

After 35 years of marriage, Larry and Susan parted ways.  Larry enjoyed his retirement years spending time with his grandchildren, Susanna and Caroline Rogers.  He enjoyed frequent family meals at local Mexican restaurants and always had his morning coffee from McDonald's.

Larry suffered from dementia in his last few years. He met his second wife, Vicki Reynolds, in 2023, and they were married in 2024, and spent their time together having fun, like they were young again.  Unfortunately, Larry suffered a series of strokes in 2025, which would eventually lead to his passing.

Larry leaves behind his wife Vicki Reynolds, his daughter, Jennifer (Glenn) Rogers and son-in-law, Bryan Rogers, and their children, Susanna Celeste Rogers (15) and Caroline June Rogers (8), his daughter, Kristin Glenn and her partner, John Chmarney, his sister, Jeanie (Glenn) Duvall and husband Tom Duvall, and a large crew of extended family and friends.

Please join the family as we honor and celebrate the life of Larry Glenn at Peevey Funeral Home in Houston, Texas.  Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 20th from 6-8 pm, with some refreshments from Chick-fil-A, one of Larry's favorite spots to eat.  A Celebration of Larry's Life will be held on Thursday, August 21st at 10 am.  There will be a short ceremony afterwards at 12:45 pm at his final resting place, the Houston National Veterans Cemetery.
