It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joyce Elaine Gillum. Joyce went to be with our Lord on the afternoon of August 16,2024 in Houston, Tx with her husband Brian by her side.

Born on December 31, 1960, in Henderson, Tx Joyce was the first of 3 children of Gerald and Jessie Jones.  The Jones family would eventually move to Houston, Tx and put down roots. In the 8th grade at Gulf Meadows Baptist School Joyce would meet her future husband Brian Evans Gillum. Joyce later attended Mount Carmel High School where she was a member of the drill team. Joyce and Brian married at the age of 21 and they had 3 sons Josh, Jason and Jesse. They settled in Houston and moved into a home down the street from her parents. Joyce attended Airway Baptist Church with her family and in 1992 she and Brian were baptized by Bro. William Passmore. Joyce remained active with the church throughout her life, always eager to prepare meals for those in need and church events.

Joyce had a passion for drawing, quilting and cooking for people. Her incredible talent for quilting can be seen in the many quilts she has given away over the years to friends and family in addition to her enthusiasm to teach her craft to anyone eager to learn. While in the kitchen, Joyce was lead by the heart, and never a recipe. This is what her family calls "one hit wonders." You could never expect to eat the same thing twice, which always made family gatherings interesting.

Joyce will forever be remembered for her strength, fighting spirit, and compassion for those in need. Even in her later years as she valiantly fought through health issues her strength never wavered.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Brian Gillum of Houston, Texas, children Joshua (Jena) Gillum, Jason (Kristina) Gillum, and Jesse (Lucy) Gillum; her 8 grandchildren, Jackson Gillum, Charlotte Gillum, Madilynn Gillum, Joslyn Gillum, Cori Gillum, Rhett Gillum, James Gillum, and June Gillum.  She also leaves behind her mother, Jessie Jones, sister Teresa (Sam) Wells, brother Carlton (Tina) Jones, numerous cousins and nieces/nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father Gerald Lee Jones, grandparents Tilford and Cleo Rogers, Joshua and Dovie Jones.

The funeral service will be held Friday, August 23, 2024, at 7pm with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Peevey Funeral Home, 12440 Beamer Road, Houston, TX 77089.

Burial will take place Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Brachfield, TX at Welch Cemetery at 12pm. All friends and family are welcome to attend.
