Johnita Elizabeth (Davis) Matkins, age 63, met Jesus face to face when she passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on August 29, 2026. She was born on February 5, 1963, in Longview, Texas to her loving father and mother, Brother Johnnie and Aunita (Harroun) Davis.

Johnita spent her early years in Longview, Texas before her family moved to Culloden, Georgia. During her high school years, the family returned to Texas, settling in Big Sandy, where she graduated from Big Sandy High School. In 1982, Johnita married the love of her life, Edmund Matkins, and they eventually made Houston, Texas their home, where she remained for the rest of her life.

Johnita loved the Lord and was a member of First Baptist Church Pasadena. Her caring nature touched many lives. She was the kind of person who was willing to do anything to help someone and her kindness, devotion, and love for her family and friends will be deeply missed.

Johnita devoted approximately 40 years to the dental field, where she was known for her strong work ethic, dedication, and willingness to help others. She poured her heart into her career and was a hard worker who could always be counted on to do whatever it took to get the job done.

Above all, Johnita was passionate about her family. She cherished time spent with those she loved and treasured the memories made along the way. She especially enjoyed cooking, antiquing, decorating her home with seasonal items, and reminiscing about previous family vacations to the Smoky Mountains. Christmas held a special place in her heart as she loved all things Christmas—especially baking delicious cookies, sweet treats, and creating traditions with her family.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Edmund Matkins; her son, Clinton Matkins and his wife, Amber; and her cherished grandson, Hudson. She is also survived by her siblings, Janice Davis of Greenville, Texas; Byron Davis of Longview, Texas; and Denzil Davis and his wife, Marsha, of Houston, Texas; along with many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition, she is survived by her mother-in-law, Barbara Matkins; brother-in-law, Richard Matkins and his wife Ingrid; sister-in-law, Linda (Matkins) Carpenter and her husband Pat; brother-in-law, Jonathan Matkins and his wife Kelley.

Johnita was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Aunita Davis, as well as her father-in-law, Cleo Clark Matkins Jr.

Her family will forever treasure the memories of her love and devotion to those around her. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love and kindness will live on through the family and friends whose lives she touched.

A service to honor and celebrate Johnita's life will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service at First Baptist Church Pasadena, located at 7500 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, TX, 77505. Interment will follow at 2:30p.m., at Confederate Cemetery, located at 998 Dickinson Rd, Alvin, TX 77511.
