Joan Hastings (Cleveland) Nagy peacefully passed away on the morning of March 4, 2024. She was born January 11, 1939 to Bertha "Birdie" Hastings in Vancouver, Washington. Her surroundings were one of beauty as she would often describe the lush landscape and mountains. She grew up in a logging community across the street from Ft. Vancouver and went to school at Providence Academy. Birdie's commitment to providing Joan a Christian education and her active membership in St. James Catholic church, set the foundation for Joan to be called home to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She and her mother, who worked in a processing factory all her life, lived off the same street as her aunts Josephine and Pauline who helped care for Joan in her younger years. Her grandmother Barbara (widowed two years before Joan's birth) lived with Birdie and Joan until Birdie's death in 1957. This left a then high school senior Joan to deal with her mother's property and burial. That same year Joan left for Texas with a school friend.

In April of 1961 she was on an outing with friends at a bowling alley when Kornel Nagy, a Hungarian immigrant and draftsman living in Houston, asked if she wanted to get a hamburger. It was like they knew each other their whole lives…instant attraction. Kornel helped her and her three children from a previous marriage to relocate with him and in June 1961, they were married.

Three more children followed: Sandra in 1962, Nancy in 1967 and Patricia in 1974. She lived her life with passion and enthusiasm and always enjoyed an evening out with her husband and family. She always kept her past life private and treasured her alone time claiming it was because she was an only child. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, husband, and her home tells her story. They are her legacy.

In early 2012, Joan started to suffer from vascular dementia. She slowly slipped away and stopped going out. Over a period of 12 years, we lost Joan very slowly. Throughout the entire ordeal, the man who asked her if she wanted a hamburger in 1961 never left her side. He tirelessly gave his all to keep her comfortable and safe until her final days.

She was preceded in death by her sons Anthony Nagy (2005) and Christopher Nagy (2015) and son-in-law Gilbert Perez (2021). Joan is survived by her husband Kornel Nagy, her children Julie Davis, Sandra Perez, Nancy Gadd (Tim), Patricia Sayles (Brad), her grandchildren, Anthony, Melisa, Colette Davis-Jones (Toni),  Desiree Palmer (Carl),  Nichole Beltran (Eddy), Jessica Pullins (Jason), Ryan Gadd (Liz), Matthew Perez, Michael Perez (Kylee), William Sayles (Annie), Johnathan Sayles, and great-grandchildren Chloe, Kaydence, Wyatt, Jamie, Aurora Grace, Cooper, Archie, Jackson, Christian, Olivia, Hunter, Riley, Kinsley, Ezekiel, Nicholas, Lucas, and Josephine.

A private graveside service for the family will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8601 Almeda Genoa Rd. Houston, TX 77075.
