Janice Olivia Young Farris passed away peacefully at home with her two loving daughters by her side on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. She was born on August 2, 1946, in Mobile, Alabama to Esther Azalea Glass Young and Luther Robert Young. Together with her older sister Barbara, she was raised by her adoring parents on a turkey farm outside of Mobile, where she made a lifetime of cherished memories filled with her extended family of beloved grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. Her family moved to San Antonio during high school, where she spent her young adulthood before moving to Houston with her late husband David and their two daughters.

Janice dedicated her life to her family, and she worked tirelessly to provide for her girls. She sometimes held two jobs to make ends meet, yet she never complained. After working as a clerk typist for the VA Medical Center, she was selected for a training program to become a certified x-ray and ultrasound technician. She was a living example of perseverance for her daughters, who for years, watched her work all day then go to school at night so she could provide her family with a better way of life. Both in her work and at home, she was dedicated to serving others and above all, her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born with a caregiver's heart, a tender bedside manner, a positive attitude and a loving spirit that was a perfect match for a career in healthcare. Janice was a patriot who loved God and her country. She took great pride in her commitment to our veterans through her civil service for more than 30 years in the Radiology Department, where she made lifelong friendships with her colleagues.

Upon her retirement, she embraced her church family at Sagemont and then later West University Baptist Church, where she made countless dear friends and memories. From trips to the Holy Land, across Europe and the United States, the last decades of her life were filled with much joy, adventure and discipleship. She was a faithful and enthusiastic volunteer at both the church and the Mission Centers of Houston for many years. But above all, she cherished her time with her family. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren wholly and beyond measure.

Janice was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband of 31 years David Ernest Farris, her sister-in-law Wanda Sue Hays, her brothers-in-law Phil and Sam Farris, her niece Linda Grimes-Kohr and her nephew Bruce Grimes. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Barbara Grimes, her brother-in-law Paul Farris and his wife Nichoel, her sisters-in-law Claudia and Maria Farris, her daughter Michele Guidry and her husband Joe, her daughter Erika Johnson and her husband Peter, her grandchildren Ryan Guidry and his wife Faith, her granddaughter Megan Wagner and her husband Tyler, her grandson Travis Guidry and his wife Addie, and her grandsons Thomas and Wyatt Johnson. She is also survived by her precious great-grandchildren Kaela, Payton, Adalynn and Maverick, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

The service celebrating Janice's life will be held at 12:00pm Monday, January 2023, at West University Baptist Church in Houston.
