Irene Barbara Saulsberry of Pasadena, Texas passed away peacefully and quietly Wednesday morning August 16th, 2023 with her children.  Irene was born on March 28th, 1941 to Eugene Francis Oberer II and Amy Meserve Youngs in Englewood, NJ.  She attended Northern Valley High School in Demarest, NJ where she was a cheerleader.  She graduated on June 12th, 1959.

Irene met the love of her life Billy Joe Saulsberry, Sr. while he was in the U.S. Army stationed in Orangeburg, New York.  Irene and Billy eloped in Demarest, NJ on September 10th, 1960 and were married for 54 years.

Shortly after their marriage, Billy and Irene moved to Texas.  They soon purchased their first and only home – totaling about 60 years of love and laughter with children, grandchildren, family and friends under one roof.

Irene's gift was hospitality, and her ministry was loving on those that entered her home with delicious food and good conversation.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and watching her grandchildren do their favorite things.  Irene was a wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother, and a role model to her family.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Francis Oberer II and Amy Meserve Youngs; her brother Eugene Francis Oberer III and her son-in-law Michael Woitena.

She is survived by her daughter Kimberly Woitena; her son Billy Joe Saulsberry, Jr. and daughter-in-law Anna Saulsberry; grandchildren Heather Finley and her husband Scott Finley, Amy Woitena, Ares Saulsberry, and Adonis Saulsberry.

The service remembering the life of Irene will be held at 3:00pm Saturday, September 9th, 2023 at Peevey Funeral Home 12440 Beamer Rd., Houston, Tx 77089 with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be Monday, September 11, 2023 at 12:45pm at Houston National Cemetery.
