It is with a heavy heart that my mother Irene Martinez Lugo earned her wings and took her place next to my daddy in Heaven. After a long struggle, her fight ended not with a shudder but with peaceful bells as she was greeted her with open arms. Heaven gained another angel and as we reflect to the emptiness left in our hearts, we take comfort knowing that she is with our Lord and Savior.

Irene Martinez Lugo, 90, passed away peacefully at home on June 21,2025 in Pearland Texas.  She was born on April 15, 1935, in Rosenberg, Texas to Mencho & Elosia Martinez. Irene was a devoted wife, sister, aunt, godmother, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friends to many.

Irene met the love of her life George Lara Lugo, and they married on November 17, 1961.  They loved spending time together, holidays with family, going dancing, and traveling.   They usually didn't travel alone – they frequently would also bring her mother and/or nieces and nephews.  They were blessed with a daughter, Veronica Irene Lugo and moved to Pearland, Texas where they would raise a family.

Irene provided childcare in her home to many Pearland families over a period of 25 years.  She also became a parishioner at St. Helen's Catholic Church and served the church in many different roles, to include 2nd grade C.C.E. teacher, wedding coordinator, helped coordinate visitation for the sick, and even looked over the taco stand at the annual bazaars.  She also served as a member of the Guadalupana's and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. She also belonged to The Alabare prayer group.

Irene is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, George Lara Lugo.  She is survived by her daughter, Veronica Lugo Hefner and her husband, Todd Hefner.   She is also survived by her three grandchildren:  Jacob Lugo Hefner and his wife Cassandra and their son Oliver; Cassandra Hefner Jenkins and her husband, Austin Jenkins and their daughter, Magdalene; and Gabriella Renae Hefner.

Irene is preceded in death by her brother Tony Martinez and survived by her brother and sister-in-law Paul and Carolyn Martinez, Sister and brother-in-law Elosia & Elias Garcia, sister Lydia Perez and many nephews and nieces.

A visitation will be held at Peevey Funeral Home, from 6:00pm-8:00pm, Wednesday, July 9, 2025.The service honoring Irene's life will be held at St. Helen Catholic Church, 2209 Old Alvin Rd, Pearland, TX 77581, at 10:00am, Thursday, July 10, 2025.
