Hazel Elizabeth Havard went to be with the Lord Jesus on October 16, 2023. She was born on March 20, 1937, to Flossie Pendergrass and Spencer Adams. She grew up in the hills of North Carolina and was born in Greensboro. She loved being surrounded by the beautiful landscape that God made, and she loved the trees. Hazel always had fond memories of her sweet mother singing hymns and reading scripture from the Bible.

Hazel had six brothers and five sisters who also enjoyed the beauty of being raised on a farm which was nestled between the beautiful, rolling hills of Greensboro. She was the eleventh child out of twelve in this bustling family, and there was never a dull moment. After graduating from high school, she met the love of her life, Prentice Havard. He was in the Navy and was just passing through when he noticed the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She was just as beautiful on the inside, and people were drawn to her kindness, gentleness, and character. So, they set out on their journey of life together and married soon after that.

God blessed Prentice and Hazel with two sons, Prentice and Alexander. They were both very healthy boys who enjoyed playing games together. Hazel led a very interesting life because there were opportunities to travel worldwide because of Prentice's business ventures. The people she met loved her right away, as so many did. Her personality drew strangers to her because of her loving spirit. It was very evident that she had a servant's heart. She remained in touch with them throughout her life. She enjoyed traveling to Greece for a wedding and then lived in Vietnam for a year and one-half.  Hazel enjoyed sharing about the differences in cultures from her own and there were many pictures and conversations around the dinner table about those unique experiences.

She always enjoyed watching her boys growing up and was very involved in their extra-curricular activities. Perry enjoyed playing varsity football, varsity basketball and varsity baseball and Alexander was a musician; he enjoyed playing the drums and guitar. Alexander formed a band with his friends and loved playing his guitar. He was also in the marching band at school where he played the drums. She was very proud of their individual accomplishments and loved that their talents were so different. Being a wife and mother was an honor for her, she was always a joy to be around. Even though she lost her youngest son to a tragedy when he was 18, they stayed together as a family and worked through the loss. She often shared her faith that God would be with them through the good times and the challenging times.

The oldest son, Perry, met the love of his life. He married Penny Messec and God blessed them with four wonderful children: Alexander Lee Havard, Jeremy Ray Havard, Benjamin Peter Havard, and Ashleigh Layne Havard. Gran Haze was the most loving grandmother, and she loved her grandchildren dearly. As the children got older, they enjoyed weekend outings at their five-acre home in Baytown by the bay. Periodically, they still enjoy visiting the area and love reminiscing about those beautiful times they spent with their Papou and Gran Haze. She was also blessed with two precious great-grandchildren named Prentice and Harrison Havard. We will certainly miss Hazel, Haze, Mom and Gran Haze but know that she is with the Lord now, there is no more suffering. She is preceded in death by her husband, Prentice Havard.

The celebration of life will be held at Sagemont Church, Saturday, November 4, at 2:00pm.
