Gene Jones, 92, was born on July 21, 1934, in Corrigan, Texas, to Walter and Dura Jones. He passed away on October 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of public service and a family who will remember him with deep love and pride.
Gene devoted many years to serving Texas. After graduating from South Texas College of Law, he received an alumni award in 1978. He served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1973 to 1976 and in the Texas Senate from April 3, 1976, to January 13, 1981. His work in both chambers reflected a lasting commitment to the people and future of his state.
In 1979, Gene joined 11 fellow Democratic state senators known as the “Killer Bees.” Together, they broke quorum for five days to block a controversial bill concerning the scheduling of Texas’s presidential and regular primaries. Their bold stand became part of Texas political history.
Above all, Gene’s legacy lives on through the family he loved. He is survived by his daughter, Vickie McRay; grandchildren Matthew, Jonathon, Dustin, Jennifer, and Sara; and great-grandchildren Andrew, Claire, Alli, Maci, Jona, Hayden, Demi, Logan, Grayson, Trenton, Rylee, Jaxson, Savannah, and Caleb. He also leaves behind numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
Gene will be remembered for a life of service, the mark he made on Texas, and the generations of family who carry his memory forward.
Visitation will be held Sunday, October 18, at 2:30 p.m. at Peevey Funeral Home (formerly Niday), 12440 Beamer Road, Houston, TX 77089. The funeral service will begin at 3:30 p.m.
A reception will follow at Doglegs Golf Lounge, 1823 Broadway Street, Pearland, TX 77581.
Burial services will be held Tuesday, October 20, at noon at the family cemetery in Union Springs, Texas.
