Carl Andrew Cavender, known to everyone as Andy, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 6, 2024, at MD Anderson Cancer Center, with his wife and daughters by his side. Born on March 9, 1950, in Dunbar, West Virginia, to Carl and Elizabeth Lucille Cavender,  Andy lived a life marked by unwavering hard work and dedication."

After graduating from Bay Village High School in Ohio, Andy attended The Ohio State University, where he played ice hockey for the Buckeyes. In 1974, he moved to Houston, Texas, where he was introduced to Cheryl Armstrong, whom he married on May 1, 1976. Together, they raised two daughters, Melissa and Angela.

Andy found joy in life's simple yet meaningful moments and could always be counted on to be in the stands, cheering as our biggest fan. He understood the importance of being present, whether it was for Missy's dance recitals, coaching Angela's softball teams, or later attending his beloved grandbabies' t-ball games, cheer competitions and dance performances. His dedication to being there for all of them was a testament to his deep love and support. He especially loved being a coach and cherished the relationships he built throughout the years on the softball field.

Andy worked at Brown and Root for five years before dedicating 38 and a half years as a crane operator for Shell Oil, retiring in 2018. His career was marked by a steadfast commitment to excellence and a willingness to mentor others. As a valued member of the Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), he championed safety with great commitment, ensuring a safer work environment for everyone. Though he never sought the spotlight, Andy was well-known for his determination and work ethic, leaving a lasting impact on those who worked with him.

Andy is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elizabeth Lucille Cavender, and his brother, Douglas Alan Cavender. He leaves behind his wife, Cheryl Cavender, his daughters, Melissa Kay Cavender, and Angela Kay Simmons and her husband, Chris Simmons. Andy was a grandfather to Aubrey Mae Simmons, Brinley Kay Simmons, Colton Edward Simmons, and Dean Andrew Simmons. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Ash and her husband, Eddie, Gail Graley, and Shirley Milkavich and her husband, Bob, along with his sister-in-law, Rhonda Cavender, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Visitation will be held at Peevey Funeral Home on September 14, 2024, at 3 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 4 p.m. The graveside service will take place on Monday, September 16.

Andy was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and coach who will be remembered for his quiet strength and the meaningful connections he shared with those closest to him. The respect and affection he earned from those who knew him speak to the lasting impact he had on their lives.
