Obituary

Brodie E. “Gene” Riner Jr., 76, passed away on October 1, 2026, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, family, service, and dedication.

Gene proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Fox. A proud “Tin Can Sailor,” Gene carried with him the camaraderie, traditions, and enduring spirit of those who served at sea. His military service was part of a remarkable family tradition spanning three generations. His father, Brodie E. Riner Sr., served in the Army Air Forces; Gene served in the United States Navy; and his son, Brodie E. “Beau” Riner III, continued that legacy through service in the United States Army. Three generations, three branches of military service, and a shared commitment to their country.

Following his military service, Gene pursued higher education at the University of Houston, earning a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering Technologies. He went on to establish a career in the construction industry, serving as an estimator, project manager, and superintendent on various inland marine, road, and bridge construction projects throughout the state of Texas. His years of hard work and dedication contributed to the development and improvement of the infrastructure of the state he called home.

Faith was a cornerstone of Gene's life and a legacy passed down through generations. Like his father before him, Gene faithfully served as a deacon at Freeway Manor Baptist Church. Together, father and son represented two generations of devotion to the same congregation, giving their time, sharing their faith, and serving their church family. Gene was a dedicated senior member of the church, always willing to lend a helping hand and support the congregation that meant so much to him.

His commitment to service extended beyond his church. As a member and volunteer of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) & American Legion Post 490, Gene continued to honor the bonds of military service, dedicating his time to supporting fellow veterans and their families. His involvement reflected the lasting importance of military fellowship and his willingness to give back to others.

Above all, Gene treasured his family. He shared 52 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Brenda K. Riner. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, family, and countless cherished memories. Spending time with his loved ones was among his greatest joys, and his devotion to family remained central throughout his life.

To Beau, he was simply the best dad in the world. His love, guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support meant more than words could ever express. The bond they shared was one of life's greatest gifts, and being his son was something Beau will always cherish.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Brenda K. Riner; his son, Brodie E. “Beau” Riner III; his daughter-in-law, Erica L. Torres-Riner; and his cherished grandsons, Aidan C. Torres, Dylan J. Torres, and Logan A. Riner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brodie E. Riner Sr. and Bernadine McKinney Riner; and his brother, Bobby M. Riner.

Gene's life was one of service in many forms: service to his country, dedication to his profession, devotion to his church, fellowship with his fellow veterans, and unwavering love for his family. He carried forward the values of those who came before him while helping shape the generations who follow.

Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on through the family he loved, the faith he shared, the work he accomplished, and the many lives he touched along the way. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Fair winds and following seas, Gene. Your watch is complete.
