Bertha Winnifred Bursey Campbell was one of three siblings of George and Sarah Bursey. She was born on August 6, 1927, in Caplin Cove, Newfoundland, Canada. In April of 2021, she was brought home to Houston, after spending most of her life in Spokane, Washington, for medical treatment on her heart. After just over two years of treatment and many treasured memories with her, she went to be with our Savior on Mother's Day May 14, 2023, in League City, Texas, at the age of 95.

Bertha's mother died when she was three and her father remarried and had kids. She was sent to live with her aunt and uncle and life was very hard. She left home when she was in the 8th grade and went to work and live in her other Aunt's candy store. She would later meet Edgar W. Endicott while working as a cashier at Pepperell Air Force Base. A captain in the Air Force, Ed married Bertha and together they moved to Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier and began to raise two children, Carol Hope Endicott and Robert Max Endicott.

Bertha's husband died soon after the birth of their son having contracted polio and on the day the vaccine became available to the public. Bertha was left to raise two children on her own with no job and a small social security check. She began to babysit the neighborhood kids while Carol and Bob were school age, taking them to school, and picking them up in her classic 1953 Packard Clipper.

Later she would meet Forrest L. Campbell through a double date. Campbell, a Major, flew C-124s for the Air Force. They married in Louisiana and moved to Spokane, Washington. They had a wonderful life together, traveling back to Newfoundland to see her father and her siblings, going camping in Alaska, and building dreams together. They were members of the Methodist Church in Spokane. Campbell became a Colonel in the Air Force and retired continuing to serve before a heart attack took his life in 1987.

Bertha found many friends through her marriage to Campbell. Many of those friends still alive and well today are friends who kept her going. Bertha enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles, and shopping at TJ Maxx. Cats were her favorite! She loved gardening. She was an avid seamstress and had stitched countless quilts of beauty. Her quilts became well known because as she would finish them, she would donate them to various charities benefiting veterans.

Bertha is preceded in death by her husband Forrest L. Campbell, her parents George and Sarah Bursey, her brother Georgie Bursey, and her sister Lillian O' Hanley. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Smith and husband Algie Smith; her son, Robert Endicott, her granddaughter Jamie Adamson and husband, Matthew Adamson; her granddaughter Summer Dorsey and husband, Shaun Dorsey; and her beloved great grandchildren Oakley Homburg, Danica Dorsey, and Delaney Dorsey.

An informal memorial celebration of Bertha's life will be held from 5:00-7:00pm on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Peevey Funeral Home at 12440 Beamer Rd. Houston, TX 77089.
