Alfonso "Al" Vasquez, 85 years old, gracefully departed to Heaven on August 26, 2025, at UTMB Health Clear Lake Campus Hospital in Webster, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on July 9, 1940, in Edinburg, Texas, and graduated from Edinburg High School in 1958. After graduation, Al served as a Yeoman in the United States Navy from November 1959 to November 1963.

Alfonso returned home and reunited with his high school sweetheart, Barbara Davila. They married on October 14, 1964, and moved to Houston, Texas, for a better life and to start their soon-to-be family. Al was a devoted husband to his wife and strong father-figure to his daughter, two sons, eight grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

Alfonso's athletic abilities did not go unnoticed. He was known as a football star and extraordinary powerlifter whose strength extended beyond the gym. Al inspired generations of men and women through training and mentorship. In his small but mighty garage gym, Al built a community and created a legacy of weightlifters. Professionally, "Big Al" devoted 33 years of service to Powell Industries. He began in 1968 and worked until his retirement in 2001.

Alfonso is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, his parents, Inocente Vasquez and Julia Gonzalez; son and daughter-in-law, Arnold and Stephanie Vasquez; and siblings, Consuelo, Pedro, Audela, and Vicente Vasquez. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Carlos Ybarra; son, Albert Vasquez; brother and sister-in-law, Inocente and Petra Vasquez; his eight beloved grandchildren: Dominique Vasquez; Kristy and, grandson-in-law, Ryan Cooper; Alexa Vasquez; Joseph Ybarra; Victoria Vasquez; Krystal Ybarra; Alec Vasquez; and Nicholas Vasquez; great-grandchild, Devin and Daxton Spears; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and dozens of adored friends. Alfonso is dearly missed by all.
